… A pre-wedding shoot in Newcastle
Hannah got in touch with me ages ago as she was looking for a Newcastle based wedding photographer to shoot her up coming wedding at Newton Hall. Getting in touch itself took a bit of courage for her, because she had a bit of a fear of being photographed and so standing in front of a camera was HER WORST NIGHTMARE.
I can’t even begin to tell you how many people feel like that, and in the days of selfies and instagram it can be very isolating, and totally confidence bashing. With Stephan and Hannah marrying in the New Year, she knew she had to get over it, so that she could have a record of her day that she loved.
After a bit of to-ing and fro-ing I picked Hoults Yard for our shoot. A quiet urban oasis in the centre of Newcastle. You do actually need permission to shoot there as it is private land, but the setting provided an ideal space for Hannah and Stephen as the wall murals gave us a really good distraction and focal point to help Hannah not think to much about the lens pointing at her and Stephen.
… at the start of the shoot, a little wary
but there is stuff to look at and talk about.
And oh boy it rained too! Really rained. At one point I think it may have snowed. All these things through, the weather, the surroundings meant we had plenty to talk about other than photos. By the end of the session, Hannah was relaxed enough to have a smoochy kiss in front of me!
One of the things for me as a photographer of people is creating a connection with you, the subject. My customers are so much more than subjects, I will be with you to witness the most momentous day of your life and record the intimate and emotional moments when I literally see your soul pouring out with love. I feel your hearts melting as you say “I will”. I tend to cry at weddings (quietly) and its because I belief much in your love you have found with each other.
… My money shot
I start as a supplier, and usually leave your pre wedding shoot as a friend. I encourage my clients to let me know all the details, and the things that might change in the lead up to your day. I am on hand to work through any worries with you. I am the supplier at the wedding which is there all day and gets totally emotionally invested.
…increasing the body contact
Bingo. Mission Accomplished. Hannah’s fears have melted away. She is totally relaxed in front of the camera. My work here is done.
Thanks to the soggy Security Guard that gave us permission to remain and shoot at Hoults Yard. Getting permission isn’t a problem, I just should have checked and written to them first!
